The full story below is Australian Institute of Marine Science's work, republished word for word. We did not edit it.
Coral cover across the northern Great Barrier Reef has reached its highest level in 36 years of monitoring, according to the long-term survey programme.
The result reflects several consecutive years of low disturbance and strong recruitment of fast-growing corals.
Researchers caution the gains remain vulnerable, but note that the reef’s capacity to recover is intact where conditions allow.
Why this matters
Reef stories are usually written in the past tense. This one is a measurement, taken the same way every year for 36 years.
